David Blyth AO
David Charles Hughes Blyth was born in Boulia, Queensland in 1934. He was blinded by the exploding of a land mine device in 1949 at the age of 14.
He is a founder member of the Victorian Blind Golf Association (BGV), the Australian Blind Golf Association (BGA) and the International Blind Golf Association (IBGA). He chaired the Committee which wrote the Constitution in 1997 to establish the IBGA one year later. David was Secretary/Treasurer from 2000 to 2004 at which time he became the second President of IBGA, the office he holds today. He was also the organising Chairman for the 2004 World championships which were held in Australia.
David is a B1 Blind Golfer. He has won all B1 events in Australia and has won twice in Canada.
David was President of the world Blind Union from 1992 to 1996. He is a member of Lions International and was District Governor in 1979/80. He was awarded Life Membership of Lions International and holds the Melvin Jones award.
He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2002 for his work for blind persons both in Australia and Internationally. This is the second highest honour an Australian civilian can receive.
David and his wife of 52 years, Jess, have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. Besides golf, which is a passion, he enjoys going to football with his grandson, Oliver, to watch the Essendon Bombers.
