ISPS Handa SA Open - 2018

Milnerton Golf Club

16 - 17 July 2018

Milnerton, Capetown

Event Report

The 2018 ISPS Handa SA Blind Golf Open was staged at the picturesque Milnerton Golf Club in Cape Town in mid-July. Despite being in the middle of winter we had the most wonderful weather, and with (uncharacteristically for the links course) very little wind.

2018 South African Open Milnerton Golf Course Capetown South Africa

Milnerton Golf Course - Cape Town - South Africa

Milnerton Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 71, challenging links course situated 10 minutes north of the city of Cape Town.

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Diep River lagoon, which border most holes, the course offers a unique golf experience. On most holes, the sound of the waves breaking on the shore just metres away can be heard. The spectacular view of Table Mountain from almost every hole is breathtaking.

The favourable conditions led to some good scoring. In particular Garrett Slattery put together a very good first round which gave him a good cushion coming into the second day. The B3 category, however, was very tight with several players still being in with a good chance of victory.

The second day saw Ernst Conradie hold off the challengers to win the B3 gross and finish as runner-up net behind Garrett. Garrett extended his lead in the B2 category to win the B2 gross. Charlene Pienaar's performance deserves mention. Charlene who won the Development category in 2016 finished in 3rd place overall net in only her second playing in the full SA Open.

In the Development division newcomer JB Matthews held off last year's winner, HP Lensley, as well as Gerald Visser and Johan Henning from Worcester to win his first SABGA title.

The final results were as follows:

•  B2 Gross Champion: Garrett Slattery - 184

•  B2 Gross Runner-up: Johan Kotze - 231

•  B3 Gross Champion: Ernst Conradie - 208

•  B3 Runner-up: Morne Els - 221

•  B3 3rd place: Charlene Pienaar - 232

•  Net winner: Garrett Slattery - 136

•  Net runner-up: Ernst Conradie - 150

•  Net 3rd place: Charlene Pienaar - 164

•  Development winner: JB Matthews (45)

•  Development runner-up: Gerald Visser (33)

•  Development 3rd place: HP Lensley (30)

Garrett's low gross for the Open marks the 10th occasion on which Garrett has had the best gross score in the SA Open.

Thanks

The SA Blind Golf Association would like to express our sincere thanks to all of those people and organisations who provided financial and other support which made this event possible.

Thanks too to the Milnerton Golf Club, and the fantastic team from management, the pro shop, catering, waiters and the invaluable caddies. We were made to feel extremely welcome throughout the event. We hope to be back at Milnerton in the near future.
